Memoirs of a Geisha

I've been reading Memoirs of a Geisha. It's a great book, and I'm really enjoying it, although it makes me very grateful for having been born an American woman of my generation. Those poor women had almost no freedom. Geisha may seem glamorous, but it is definitely not a good life.

I was telling Dave that reading this book makes me more interested in Japanese art. We went to a kimono exhibit at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Washington, D.C. not too long ago, and was saying that I think I would have appreciated it more had I read this book first. I'm not very good about reading non-fiction. I get bored too easily. A good historical novel, however, at least one that is well-researched and accurate in its depictions of the cultural setting, can be very educational.

Memoirs of a Geisha is a fabulous book, I just finished reading it a few weeks ago and Tim and I saw the movie (better to see that first than after reading the book... it's quite disappointing in some aspects compared to the novel). There's a lot of conspiracy behind it all, the writer was not supposed to write this story. In fact, the woman who this story is about, sued him. It's very educational though, I agree with that. I think for a male writer, he did a very good job in writing a novel completely in the perspective of a female geisha.

Sorry to bother you again.. but I just bought a book from Borders called Geisha, A Life. It's a biography of the most famous geisha in Japan, I have a strong feeling that it's the person that Memoirs of a Geisha is based on. Just thought you'd want to know.
